In December of 2008 Roanoke County received a petition for a zoning change in West Salem on the lot previously occupied by the Salem City Water Plant.  The petitioner wishes to change the zoning of this property from I-1 Low Intensity Industrial District to I-2 High Intensity Industrial District with Special Use provisions to permit the operation of an Asphalt Plant.  The Citizens for Positive Growth was started by a group of concerned citizens from the surrounding neighborhoods in an effort to organize an opposition to the proposed zoning change.  The Citizens for Positive Growth believe that without proactive efforts from our community similar requests to place heavy use industrial sites within close proximity of our homes and schools will continue to challenge our quality of life and our community.
